Tumblr assignments: Personal strategy, case study and follow recommendations

Personal strategy: Create a semester-long Tumblr plan for yourself, following the guidelines previously outlined. At the end of the semester, you will evaluate how your plan went. (See the class website for guidelines to develop and execute your plan.)

Blogging: Speaking of a personal strategy, that means you’ll need to create a Tumblr account. (You can use a previously created account.) Post at least once a week for the rest of the semester; that should be part of your plan. Posts can be anything you want — content and themes are up to you, as you outline in your personal strategy. Blog posts will be due 8 a.m. Monday morning. Include your blog’s URL in your personal strategy.

Case study: Follow a news source (local, national or international), a brand, a celebrity and a college student (from any college or university) for 48 hours, and create a Tumblr case study following the guidelines previously outlined. They cannot be the same people or businesses that you followed for your Twitter or Facebook case studies

Follow recommendations: Suggest five Tumblr blogs that your classmates should follow. They can include any of the people or brands that were part of your case study. Include the nature of the recommended users’ posts: Professional, personal, humor, etc. Identify why each is a good follow. Share your recommendations as a Facebook group post.

Remember: Spelling, grammar and punctuation count.

All assignments are due before class Feb. 28.

Getting started with Tumblr

Tumblr editor Jessica Bennett on new platforms for news and the rise of the GIF

Tumblr is a media company in the same way Facebook and Twitter are — they offer a venue for people, as well as publishers, to share content. Earlier this year Tumblr hired Jessica Bennett, a former editor and writer for Newsweek, as its executive editor. Bennett said her days are spent mining Tumblr for ideas and helping to promote all the ways publishers and individual writers are using Tumblr for storytelling.

Is Social Media Playing a Role in a Global Power Revolution?

Social media and technology are mere catalysts in a global revolution that’s altering the very nature of power in our civilization. This movement is mixing the top-down “old power” with a sideways-flowing “new power,” according to the 92Y’s deputy executive director, Henry Timms.

How Social Media Is Taking Over the World

More than ever, people are using Twitter, Facebook and other social media sources to learn about what’s happening in the world as traditional news outlets become increasingly less relevant to the digital generation.

American forces’ raid on Osama Bin Laden, Whitney Houston‘s death, the Hudson River plane landing — these are just a few of many major news stories ordinary citizens broke on Twitter first. Professional journalists, meanwhile, use Twitter all the time to break news quickly before writing up full articles.

Obama using videos and social media in campaign

If there is one thing that you took from the 2008 presidential election, it was probably that Barack Obama used social media like no president ever before. He created a huge network and it has been said that Facebook helped him win the election. OK, most likely this isn’t what you took from the election, however in the world of social media, this is very important and probably changed the way politicians will campaign forever.
